My '72 4 speed car seems to have the reverse lights staying on whenever the key is turned over, regardless of gear shifter position. Should I replace the switch on the transmission? Easy job?
Hi sl,
The switch is moved by a little rod, (looks like a piece of coat-hanger), about 4-5 inches long that runs from the reverse lever on the transmission to a lever on the switch.
I'd first check if that's there, fastened (2 tiny clips), and moving.
If it is, I guess it is a switch problem, and will need to be replaced.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan
I had this problem when I switched my clutch and had my tranny rebuilt. When the time came to put this switch back on I mounted it in the center of the slots that hold it.
This meant the back up lights were on all the time. Very confusing for drivers following you.
I then moved the switch to the other end of the slots and that solved the problem. I think the swich can be twisted clockwise or counterclockwise in the slots.
Agreed, when I first installed the back up light switch on my 4 spd, it took some adjusting of the slots to get the lights to go off when they were supposed to. While I was playing with the adjustment (I took several tries), I just disconnected the wiring at the firewall.
