Hello again members . Need some more info . What would be a good starter for my 71 ls5 ? Can I use a newer GEN 5 starter that are more quiet and stronger or should I go after market ? Would prefer a direct fit with no shims if possible .
I vote , send yours to a good rebuilder, and make sure you get the same one back, the oe ones are getting rare. if you dont have shims now , you shouldnt need them when it gets back. Starter shims are pretty much a way of life with chevy starters and you never know if you'll need them or not.
I got lucky & found a G. M. rebuilt for a 427, changed the head to mine, it has a whole new sound on that motor. Old one rebuilt only lasted 8 years. I agree have your old one rebuilt. I bought the 427 one, on this forum. No trade in wanted or needed, by seller. Have a good one. Gene
I just bought on from Austin Performance. Over the phone the counter man said that people were going with this starter and he had heard of no problems. I measured the mounting bracket and bolt holes. This one was 1/8" closer between the drive gear and the mounting surface. No problem just remove the three allen bolts and turn the mounting block 180 degrees.
Oh, heck one of them is pretty stripped. I was able to remove the third allen bolt and one from the one I was removing was donated to this new starter.
I jacked up the car installed the starter and then headed into the house and took a seat to watch the rest of the debate. As I sat there I was thinking about how cheesy this starter was. The bendix body looked like a D cell batery. It was pressed together and really looked like cheap Chinese crap. So I figured I would go back out and hook up my battery and turn it over.
Just to be save I disconnected my coil wire so it wouldn't start in the event there were some sort of bind. I was careful on the install and it was easy but there was not opprotunity cost in being safe.
Long starter story shorter, it didn't work. I took it back out and bench test, didn't work. I guess I will do the job twice and drive back across town again.
Engine Works brand mini hi-torque starters are trash.
Many posts on this topic and a good mini is great if you need to replace the starter anyway. My original was rebuilt when I had the engine rebuilt but with headers I would get the dreaded no-hot restart problem. Bought a NAPA 850 CCA / 1000 CA battery and voila, problem gone.
