Default Reverse lights - female wire

Hello gentlemen, been reading this for years...figured it was time to join. 4th vette owner, thanks for having me

I just got a 1968 with manual tranny, have no reverse lights...literally. I have male wire that connects to tranny, but the female end is non-existant (wasted around 4 hours yesterday searching as I cursed every explicit possible). I looked at every square inch of firewall, and contorted my body every way possible to look behind dash/front side of firewall, and took apart cover for where stick shift is.

So, does anyone know where this female reverse light switch originates? If my car doesnt have one, how do I run this wire, and from where? I know it needs to end up coming thru firewall....thats about it

Your rear wiring harness should connect down by the fuse pannel and run back to the rear of the car through the driver's side door sill. If you have brake lights, its there. May have been cut or hidden for some reason.

You should get an Assembly Manual from one of the parts companies. Corvette America, Ecklers, Zips, etc.

Welcome to the forum and congrats on the car. Need to post PICS.

As above and IF my memory serves correctly it's a white wire too....there was this switch on my Muncie, and it activated in reverse only, the other terminal feeding +12 to the switch I draw a blank on the wire color....

Hi p2w,
Welcome!
In 71 there is a short (3') jumper harness with 2 wires that comes forward and up from the transmission. It makes a connection just before going through a grommet in the firewall to the right of the master cylinder, it then becomes part of the rear lighting harness and heads to the rear of the car through the interior.
The connector is at the very center/ bottom of this picture. It's the same grommet as the tach cable and oil pressure line come through.
Maybe similar on your 68?
I hope this helps!
Regards,
Alan

I just checked my 68 4-speed. Two wires, from the backup switch itself, go up to the firewall " V " connector like Alan said. The wires are light brown and green. I am glad that I checked this for you because I found out that one of my clutch rod springs are broken. Lou.

Thx for responses, still can't find a thing, pretty frustrating (over 6 hrs searching now for a freakin' wire that possibly doesnt exist). Here are a few pics of behind foot pedals and where wire should be coming out of grommet on firewall. So, my question is, how do/where do I connect this female wire to? Any ideas on where it starts.....my car cant pass inspection until my reverse lights work.

nevermind...apparantly, I cant post attachments

Is your four speed original? If the car has been converted to four speed, the PO may not have installed the reverse lights pigtail and switch.

Hi p2w,
Everyone can post pictures.
Up load them to a site like Photobucket, copy the IMG code of the picture you want us to see, and then then paste the code in the body of, or after, your message.
Regards,
Alan

Play2Win, You really need to get a 68 AIM and the 68 service manual. The AIM has diagrams of the back-up switch and the wire routing.

Have the very same problem as you on my 69. The backup switch and all mounting hardware were missing. Bought what I needed from one of the supporting vendors, but then couldn't find the mating connector and wiring. When I removed the driver's side lower dash, I found that the b/u circuit wires had apparently shorted together. The burned wires were clipped and taped approx. 6" from the wrapped wire bundle that ran to the center gauge cluster. The two wires are pink and lt green, and exit the bundle behind and above the clock. I was able to obtain a used connector w/wiring from a forum member. Still haven't made repairs. As suggested, you need to obtain the AIM. Will answer a lot of questions.
