Default Jim Shea question

Jim, I have a p/s pump from an '88 vette on my '72 r/pinion conversion vette....
as I recall, I plugged in the pump output valving from my '72 stock system, come think of it, and everything worked fine...
I noticed the other day the steering with the rack in it now seemed to be very 'light' feeling, just ME, since wifey drives it more than I do these days??? or is there a possible valving/pressure/flow problem???

It very well could be me, as I"ve been driving the truck much more these days...

cars seems to run fine, just seems too much assist, that's all....

GENE   :D :D

If you still got the parts, why not put the original fitting and flow control plunger back in your 1988 pump. The 1988 pump is a small Saginaw pump called a TC. I am not sure that the union fittings and the flow control plungers were interchangeable between a C3 Vette P-pump and the TC. So I am not sure what flows you may have with that combination.

Jim, would that TC pump be the same as for the Grand am the rack came out of???
if it is, I just may junkyard another valve...been too many years, all I remember is they did interchange, but looked differant...so I assumed I needed whatever pressures the old system desired, so changed it into the new pump...
so now I have the rack and not sure about the feel...maybe too much pressure...
which one would takemore pressure, the old original steering or the new rack ...for the same amount of assist....

Gene,
You aren't going to change the steering feel very much by changing the pump flow control valve. Despite its name, the flow control valve actually regulates the pressure relief setting. The torsion bar in the steering gear valve controls how much twist you have to apply from the steering wheel in order to get power assist. So the gear valve is the major component that controls the effort.

Having said this, you can have too much flow (regulated by the pump union) which could give you a lighter feel going down the road.

The pressure relief setting only comes into play when you are nearing full lock. If you don't have a high enough setting you will run short of getting to full lock. Too much pressure can be hard on the hoses and on the seals in the pump and gear.

Jim, so findig a smaller pump output orifice would lessen the amount of assist and make for more road feel??? if so, looks like another junkyard trip soon...
