strange clicking noise
I recently noticed that there is a rythmic clicking noise comming from the engine compartment lately. It seems to change speed with RPMs and I can hear it when im not moving. It seems to be coming from the passenger side. Could this be a lifter going bad?

Get one of the cheapy stethoscopes from the parts store. My ticking turned out to be the distributor. I was convinced it was a lifter and the stethoscope pointed me to the distributor.

I agree with the stethoscope idea...I have been told that the electrical connection on top of the Q-jet carb to control mixture should click if working right. It doesn't. She (81) goes in for smog Tuesday and I will find out. Pray for us. I will post. Stevo

Cut a section of garden hose or heater hose and use it for a stethiscope. Hold one end to ear and move the other around to pinpoint the source of noise. Its always worked great for me. Typically, exhaust leaks pronounce themselves more when the engine is under load, like when accelerating or climbing a hill. Valve train noises are more consistant all the time.
