If you grind off either side(whichever is easier to access) of those pins, cant you use a punch and a hammer to remove whats left?

Hi Doug, that is pretty much my question. I'm not sure how they are in there, pressed in or what? I'm guessing they are pressed in but I just didn't want to make a big mistake making an assumption. Thanks!

If someone would answer the question that I asked then maybe you'd be right.

The question is do I cut the pin then using a punch drive the remainder out of the flange, at least Doug was able to grasp that was the question but seemed unsure if that's what needed to be done.

By the time you are done discussing and then cutting and hacking the original flexible coupling you could have dropped the steering column, pulled it back two inches, removed the original, and installed the new one (a couple times).

Here is a paper that completely discusses dropping and pulling the steering column.

if you have the new parts, I don't understand what the concern is with destroying the original one's by grinding and banging out with a hammer?

Because you don't need to. . Those pins are hot riveted in as I understand it so you don't just punch them out. But why even go that route. Just take the extra step to make it easier.

Looks like the op failed to drop the column and pull it back in the compartment. The coupler can then be removed. The top part slides up, and the bottom removed. Looks like he has the parts spread apart enough where the pinch bolts are to slide both parts off.

When you change yours read Jim's paper first. It will save you time and frustration.http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/wp-co...hing24ja07.doc

Thanks guys, yes not knowing proper steps does make it frustrating to say the least. For the record, I have changed a rag joint before but it certainly was not anywhere near involved, just four bolts, no pins pressed in or otherwise attached.

Thanks again!

I did finally get this, and didn't have to pay anyone. I did just as I was trying to confirm, cut the pins, ground off the heads on the couple and punched them out, after that it was easy. I didn't want to screw the coupler up and have to but another since I'm well over budget on this engine swap, now I'm going to be at least a week behind but I guess that life!
