Gentleman; I just purchased a 1977 Corvette yesterday & it needs a new engine. Question: Has any one pulled the engine without removing the Shroud & radiator? The last three cars I changed engines in, needed a new radiator, so I had them out anyway. It looks as though it would come right out of there with the water pump, fan, power st. pump, Alt. & A/C off the frt. , Also the original owner said; The engine locked up from the antifreeze in it on the Hwy. I haven't tried to turn it over yet. There shouldn't be any problem pulling the torch converter still hooked to the flywheel, Or am I just trying to be positive. LOL Thanks & have a great day. Gene
pulled the engine in my 79, with water pump and all accessories removed, basically lifted straight up and slightly forward, but my radiator and shroud stayed in place. disconnect the TQ from the flexplate. if an automatic. pretty basic. good luck
definately loosen the torque conerter and leave it in the trans, you will for sure ruin the sael possibly break the shaft and pump housing not to mention a river of trans oil spilling out.about 2 gallons in the converter.it will come out but i used a tilting device to clear everything.it does come real close to the radiator.
If you can't rotate the engine enough to disconnect the torque converter, I'd pull the radiator and shroud so you could pull the trans and engine as a unit. No reason to risk damage to the radiator or trans because you don't want to pull the shroud or radiator.

To which I may add, you have to leave some seal in the rear of the trans, where the d/shaft goes in, if you don't the entire load of fluid in there will drain on the floor, as it comes out basically tail shaft down.....
and yes, rad and so forth has to come out, you can need remove fan to avoid the rad support- a/c condenser.....
IMO, it's just too much mess even in a an old A body.....but if engine is genuinely locked up, you are in for a mess any which a way you go....
Today update: I dropped the pan, as well as the idler arm down to get clearance to get the pan down. Rod out the side of pan. I unfasten all the rods but two which I couldn't get to the nuts, & loosened the main caps, Still would not turn. Looked in pan & found part of the cam, two whole lobes laying in there. LOL In the morning I'm pulling the balancer, timing cover, & chain to see if that frees up anything. I'm pulling this on my I Beam, hard to pull Trans. with engine. Thanks for all your ideas, I Appreciate, Wish me luck LOL Gene
If you've got cam parts in the pan, it's broken hard, all the extra work you're doing, pulling the pan, the front end, you could have already had the engine and trans out....just say'n...
Gentleman; Update pulled the harmonic balance r, pulled frt. cover, dropped timming gear & chain, still wouldn't move, Put 36" pipe wrench on crank end, another lifter & push rod fell & she rolled over to the last converter bolt came out. Yea. Thanks guys, I Appreciate your help. Your right could of, should of, would of, is not in my usage of language. Have a great week. Gene
