I recently replaced the starter on a 1971 engine that was originally a 350/ 4 speed manual, which has been replaced with a new 700R4 auto trans. The car is new to me, and the starter I replaced was not factory original, so I don`t have that as a reference.
My issue is that the pinion gear on the "summit high-torque mimi starter (829100)" I installed has a gap between it and the flex plate of about .25", where the maximum gap the starter calls for is .14".
Thus, the starter is not fully engaging the flex plate, and appears to be destroying the ring gear!
Any input on a starter that will work? If I go factory original I may have clearance issues with my headers and exhaust.
does that starter have shims, in between the starter body and the mounting block? if so remove them, the starter that would work the best is one of the stock mini starters from a later year C4
if you want to stay aftermarket , heres a popular one from c4
