Default 1977 Chrome Ignition Wire Covers

I didn't have any chrome box, chrome side pieces or the 2 mountings when I bought my car.
I just got them all on Ebay but I have no idea on how they go in, or where they mount to.
Does some one have a diagram or pictures of this?
Also it didn't come with the wing nuts, can someone please tell me how many I need and what size they are?

Thanks
Jack

'77 was the last year for the chrome "box" for the ignition components. The way those parts were assembled is shown in the A.I.M. for 1977. Also, the '77 only put spark plug shielding on the rear pairs of plugs on both sides....none on the front pairs. The '77 did have the V-shaped lower plug wire covers assembled to the engine block. The "engine dress" configuration is also in the AIM.

Hi Jack,
You really DO need the AIM for your car.
The shielding takes 8 wing nuts.
You also need 2 brackets for the the distributor cover, 1 bracket for each of the vertical shields, and 2 brackets for each of the horizontal shields.
Regards,
Alan

I agree with 7T1 and Alan. Purchase the assembly instruction manual (AIM). The AIM shows the installation of the factory ignition shielding including the brackets, wing nuts, grommets, wire looms, etc.

When you're digging around under the hood trying to get it all to fit, it might be of small solace to know that on the assembly line almost all of the shielding was installed with the engine out of the car.

Easy for them; minor PITA for us.

Hi Alan,

I have the AIM for my 77, 63 (Vettes) & 67 GTO.
I also have the factory books, Brown, Blue, Green & Orange for 1977.
I always have had a hard time finding what I need in the AIM or reading it.
Can you give me a tip?
Even on this is it section Y12?

Thanks
Jack

Oddly, all of that ignition shielding is shown in the AIM under the "Optional Equipment" section with the radio [i.e. U69]. Since the purpose of that shielding is to eliminate radio interference, that's where they put it. I'm guessing that the vehicle assembly facility actually installed all that stuff to the engine on the line, before installing in the car....rather than having it installed at the engine factory...since that info did make it into the AIM. Otherwise, it would have been in the AIM (or similar document) for the engine build plant.

Hi Jack,
7T1 is right, the ignition shielding is with the radio sheets because cars without radios didn't get it.
If you're adding the ignition shielding you should check for the heat shielding too. This includes the 2 brackets for the distributor shield mounting and also includes the 2 brackets required for mounting the vertical wire shields Engine Section UPC 6, Sheet B6. (71 AIM).
Radio Sheets UPC U69, Sheets A5 and A6. (71 AIM).
Finding things in the AIM can be a hassle, BUT there's very little that's not there.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

Hi Alan,

I have the 2 brackets, 2 wire covers and 2 center boxes. One center box has a slot and one doesn't. Which is correct for the 77?

Thanks
Jack

Hi Jack,
I looked at the covers and the vendors show 1 for L70-74 and another for 75-E77.
The 75-77 cover is larger than the one for 70-74 and has a small rectangular opening in one face of the cover.
Perhaps a 77 person will reply with the info you need.
Regards,
Alan

Which one does your AIM show? If memory serves, the 77 distributor cover was not much more than an L shaped shield. It might need the slot to clear the air cleaner.

A picture of your 2 top boxes would help identify what you have.

I bought on Ebay 2 boxes, 2 side wire shrouds, 2 mounts. No butterflies.
I will take a photo and post it during the week.

Thanks
Jack
