My car has the 3.08 stock gears and she's leaking. I'm thinking about buying a rebuilt unit with a little bigger gears like the 3.55. Question, will I only notice a difference from a dead stop.. Will I notice any difference doing 40mph and punching it like when I'm passing someone? I now the engine will tach higher at faster speeds but is it worth doing? I haven't price out what it would cost to have the seal fix/replace but I'm guessing it's not TOO much more than buying a rebuilt.. Thoughts?
3.08s are great on the Freeway, while 3.55s are great for cruzin'. My 3.55s turn 3K @ 70mph ( a bit much for chambered pipes!). I dont do much freeway drivin, but I dont think I'd be happy with 3.08s for cruizin either. You call on this one from my point of view.......
Thanks for the reply. What I'm after is how the 3:55 will feel at higher speeds. I usually do between 45 and 55 on back roads to work.. Ocassionally on freeway but mostly the 45 to 55 range. I come across a lot of 40mph folks on these roads. Probabbly cause that's the speed limit.. There is only a few places you can pass because the road is windy. I wanted to know if I"m doing 40mph or so and stomp to pass will I feel any more pull or faster pickup with 3:55 or will I be reaching peak HP  because of the higher gears and loose any benefit of the bigger gears. I know from a stop the 3:55 will give me more feel in the seat of my pants.. wondering about upper end..
I would go with 3:73's if you do not do a lot of interstate traveling...Man what a difference it made in the way my car launches..It also goes like a Bat out of hell when you stomp on it at speed
The 80 uses a different rear than the 63-79 cars. You actually have 3.07 gears. The ratios available to you are slightly different then the normal 63-79 cars. They are available for different ratios but make sure they are for an 80 and not 79 and earlier. Your car has the Dana rear in it.
