I've been struggling with swaping out an OEM TI module with the new ones offered by M & H. I have tried two of them and can't get the engine to fire. All grounds are good and the harnesses are all new. The engine will run fine with the OEM circut board installed in the heat sync but I get no spark durring cranking with the M & H module. The wires inside the heat sync are bent in such a fasion that they line up perfectly with the male tabs sticking out of the unit. So I don't think they are hooked up incorrectlly. I've taken extra steps to be sure the module is grounded to the heat sync and that the heat sync is grounded to the engine block. They just won't work. But I can drop in the OEM one and she fires right up. I dont really want to use the OEM board because it is old and I don't know it's history. I don't trust it. Here is a picture of the M & H module:
Corvette Central offers one that is manufactured by someone else and they have wonderful things to say about it. It looks a lot different. Their part number 27212. Has anyone used this unit or have any words of wisdom? Here is a picture of the CC unit:
I have not personnaly talked to them but my local corvette repair shop guy has. That's where he bought it for me. He is also trying to figure out what'as wrong. I'm just exploring the corvette forum for other expert opinions, suggestions or advice. It seem very odd that two brand new units from M and H would be bad, don't you think?
The original TI units were built well. Otherwise, it wouldn't have lasted 40 years and still be working. I'd leave the original in the car and return what doesn't work. But, that's just me....
That's probably what I'll do. but still curiopus if anyone has converted using the unit offered By Corvette Central.
They say: "Our New Board
*New silicon transistors work up to 300 degrees F and gives easy hot and cold starts. It compensates for a "weak magnet" and gives you Full Stark at low crank RPM's.
*New design maximum volts to 25,000+
*New design equals long life, smoother operation, and better performance.
In addition, our new switch current gives the fastest coil "rise time" which means smoother operation thru all rpm ranges and no misfires! Performance up to 9000 rpm, guaranteed!!! Now your 64 to 71 gm ti system will be equal to the best race systems on the market and will give easy starts plus smooth drivability! Our new board mounts in the stock heat sink and connects using the factory wiring harness it's plug and play!
Sounds pretty good to me for less than a buck an a half

UH? Original TI units were built using the best technology they had avalible at the time but, time marches on.....
I have no problem with running current silicon transistors over germanium transistors that are more than twice as likley to fail in service. I have installed M&H boards in the past, and haven't had issues with them but, maybe quality has gone down the drain over the years.
