Default Auto electricians - help!

I am clueless when it comes to electrical so here's my problem.

My flashers don't work but when I put them on and apply the brakes the directional signals on the dash light up and stay lit until I let off on the brake pedal. I changed the flasher hoping that would do it but no luck.

Any thoughts?

Not sure why the brake pedal would have anything to do with it. My turn signal light stayed on when I had the lights on because I had a light bulb out. Once I changed it, the turn signal no longer stayed on all the time when the headlights were on. The light that stayed on was the buld inside the speedometer, i.e., the left hand side (front in this case) had the light bulb that was out.

If memory serves me right I remember that when you have your flashers on and apply the brakes the flashers stopped. So I do believe they are connected, could be wrong though since I am as stated clueless when it comes to electrical issues...

I just went out to the garage and tried mine. My flashers work but when I step on the brake the indicators on the dash stay lit. I think all you need to do is get the flashers working.

LOL, yes that's what I'm trying to do. I think I confused things when I said they stay on when I press the braked pedal, I was just trying to show that in some way they are coming on but not flashing. Thanks

Sounds like the emergency flasher is activated. Pull the **** out. If that don't work, you will have to go into the column.

Before you start tearing into things check to see that you have a good ground at the lights and flasher. Bad grounds can do all kind of weird things.
Get a volt meter put it into the ohms mode and check the ground at the flasher and also at the bulbs.

Will do that tonight, although I'm not sure how to do it at the flasher but the bulbs I think I can figure that out As stated I am clueless in auto electric, not real good in industrial/home either!

With the voltmeter in ohms mode touch the two leads together. You should get zero or nearly zero. That is perfect continuity. When checking for a good ground you want to touch the ground you are testing with one lead and touch a known good ground somewhere else on the car, ie frame or metal under the dash and look to get a number near zero on the meter.

The farther away from zero you are the worse the ground is and you may have corrosion or a broken wire if you cant get something reasonably low like 200 ohms or so. A perfect ground is the negative post on the battery.

thanks that does clear it up a bit, what post on the flasher is ground or is it marked (I didn't look or notice).

The flasher is a 2 post unit with no ground.

I found this post on signal flasher. Check to see if this is the one you replaced.
I have not checked my flasher, I just assumed there is a ground there. Could be it is all through a different grounding point. I believe the housing on the bulb is the ground and the center point/points is/are power don't remember for sure since it's been a looong time since I had to mess with any lights. If in question turn tail lights on and see which spot has the power (12 volts) to it.

Ok, after reading through most of the first page on that thread the "flasher" I was replacing is my turn signal flasher (on the passenger side), Durango boy said that the emergency flasher is on the fuse block. I do have a fuse for the flasher that is good, test light lights up on both sides. Also, my turn signals do work.

They also mention an electronic flasher, what in the world is the difference between a regular flasher???

I do appreciate your help REELAV8R

EDIT: This is the part they mentioned, the electronic flasher...

Ok, I didn't know what an electronic flasher was either. Glad you got it working.

Actually didn't get it working was only able to take a quick look at things last night.

In that thread they mention that the flasher on the Passenger side is for turn signals, I disconnected it and confirmed that the signals no longer worked. In the thread it also states that the emergency flasher is by the fuses, I see a fuse in the fuse box (that is good), but don't know of a flasher relay there.

Default Flashers

Ok Hopefully I know this one because I just went through it on my 76. On the fuse block , located on the drivers side inside fire wall , is a round silver flasher fuse/relay. It plugs into the top corner of the fuse block. Replace it and your problem should be solved!

Sweet, hope that's it will look when I get home! No worries about the confusion, sometimes what's in my head just doesn't come out as it sounds with the committee talking between the ears
