I am about to replace the carpet on the sides by the shifter. I am unsure how this should go together. It looks like you have carpet over carpet without a nice edge on it. Is this correct? When I first saw the car the pieces were not installed. If someone has a picture or diagram that may help me. I am unsure if this carpet should go under or over the floor carpet.

this is correct, but remember the seat is in the way for most of it. floor carpet and lastly the console piece gets screwd on OVERLAPPING the floor carpet
I took a different approach. Used the pressboard as a template and cut some out of .040 aluminum. It was pre-painted white so all I had to do was scuff it and paint it with black "trim" paint.

hey, not bad!
yeah, one of my boards was totally cracked in half at the smallest section in the middle. little fiberglass resin and cloth, both sides, sit over night, good as new
Assuming the car is a 1978-1982... If you look at the bottom of the shifter plate and the botton of the parking brake console you'll notice there is a fitment (slot) edge. Make sure when you install the carpet on the boards that it will fit up in that edge. It is this edge the keeps the carpet under the shift plate and under the parking brake console.
If you short it, the carpet will pull out from under. Another place of interest is the dip in the panel right between the parking and shift consoles. Make sure you put enough carpet over the edge so you don't have a gap in it at this point. If you straight up glue the carpet to the side panel flush you'll have issues.
Just take your time and test fit before you glue! That is the best advice I can offer.
