but the "trapdoor" was missing. I removed the shroud when put the '87 'vette serpentine belt setup on, and while it was out, I riveted a thin piece of aluminum over the hole in the shroud. I have always wondered what the purpose of this trapdoor was. It seems like it would interfere with the radiator fan's ability to pull air through the radiator. Why would you want the fan to pull air from somewhere other than through the radiator?
At engine speeds over 2500 rpm, at highway speeds, the fan clutch will completely disengage and freewheel. This blocks air flowing from the radiator. The trap allows the air to bypass around the fan when a positve pressure builds up ahead of the fan.
Ah! Sort of like the little one-way flappers you sometimes see on electric fan shrouds, eh? Thanks for the info, my curiosity is now satisfied, but now I feel like "Why didn't I think of that?". I'm not experiencing any cooling problems, so I think I'll just leave it the way it is for now.
