Distributor question

How can I know if the gear on my HEI Distributor is a steel gear or a melonized gear
( spelling may be off on that last gear !!)

You have to specifiy who the manufacturer is of your HEI distributor both GM and many aftermarket companies make them. Are you intending to use a roller cam?

I do have a roller cam .. Not sure of the brand and have looked on line about the gears only to find out there are 3 metal types for the gears but have not found out how to tell them apart. ( brass may be an obvious )

GM performance parts sells the gear separately.

Thanks loup68 ... I am pretty sure the gears can be bought anywhere

But how does one tell visually or otherwise if the gear is steel or melonized ?????

I bought a DUI tach drive distributor and had their gear replaced with a new GM one . I think the gear was about $16 dollars. Why take the chance of ruining your cam? I do not think it would be easy to tell what the gear is. Lou.
