Not as impressive in 2nd gear....

But you get the idea....

And thats with a too short kickdown cable....not allowing WOT!!

Sounds and Looks good-Congrats on a job well done and saving lots of money doing it yourself.

I would bet that your combo would be really potent with even a 4 speed with those 3.70 gears instead of the turbo 350 trans!

Id guess +100 hp over stock.....just seat of pants feel.

A RS500 5 speed conversion is on the chalkboard. And eventually upgrade to 383 in a few years.

With your 3.73 rear gearing your 1st gear with an RS500 will be 12.57 to 1. A TKO 600 will be better @ 10.7 to 1. Best bet is the new Legend SS700 close ratio from Keisler with a 2.66 first. This gets you a 9.92 to 1 first gear ratio and a choise of .80 or .68 fifth gear.

Just curious, I thought the L82 blocks were painted black in 78.

I figured out why it felt so sluggish....
So it has felt like the secondaries were sporadically kicking in, and sometimes not kicking down a gear.

Sure enough, the tranny kickdown cable was too short, preventing full WOT. I adjusted the cable (just enough adjustment to work with the performer rpm) and whaddya know??

She runs like a raped ape. Also set the timing to 36 degrees. Mucho Grande!!

So, with full timing AND full throttle she gets out of her own damn way rather nicely.

Im taking her in for tuning on the dyno next week and have the carb recalibrated for the increased air flow. I will post dyno data when I get it.

Its fun to drive again!

After much ado....... I have dyno numbers!!!...(sort of..)

Another short story long:

Took the car in for dyno tuning to Modern Classics here in Portland Oregon.
Steve was very gracious and seemed to know his way around a Qjet so off it went.

Unfortunately once on the dyno it developed a bunch of gremlins. Power steering leak, Transmission leak (All pre-existing), pipe plugs in the heads worked loose and started leaking...choke power wire lost power, etc..ugh..it was a nightmare. Steve kept his cool, set it on the backburner until he could get it in.

He spent hours tuning the Qjet, but couldnt get better than 18:1 AFR at idle.
So rather than continue to fuss, we slapped on an Edelbrock AVS 650.
Tuned in no time and down the road.

He didnt run it very hard on the dyno, so I dont have peak numbers, but by reading teh curve it looks like a solid 300hp at the wheels at 6500 rpm. (modest guestimate)

Peak run was cut short at 4800 rpm. This motor revs nicely to 6500.

Ill be sending the Smog-ra-Qjet out for rebuild.

Timing is at a conservative 12 initial, 28 @ 2200 and he added an adjustable vac can so it sits right at 45. (Ill likely advance that a little and see what I get.)

The carb is jetted at 65/52 rods with 400 jets. Pink Springs.

I now have 12.7:1 AFR at WOT idle and cruise.

Not bad for a 220hp net car.

Now on to the next project..leaks!

PS: My 38k L82 had the heads changed at some point....it had 1.94s not 2.02s....

If you leave everything as is and bump your inital to 16, 32 @ 2200 and 49 with vac you will get a noticable bump in power. The auto, accessories and drivetrain is likely amounting to about a 25% loss. Your over 400 FWHP with dyno headers and performance tune. Nice for a stock L82 with heads, cam, exhaust, intake.

Don, the idle circuit could be a very easy fix. What cam are you running with the new setup?

Let me know if you'd still like me to run through it for you and we could probably work something out. I know the late 70's quads real well.

Looks like he cut u short Don. 6500rpm would show a lot more hp and thats a nice flat looking torque curve too. So RWHP is what 20% or more below net hp? What shape is your tranny in? An old auto will slip like hell. Performance kits for autos now have modern material for clutches, bands and more efficient torque converters too. Something to consider.

Thx for sharing Don,

Cam is a Howards Hyd Roller .500/.510 230 @ .050 and 112 LSA.

Trans is probably all original, and needing some love. Since a 5spd is on the future plate, Im not planning on sinking much into the auto.
