Nice thing about these mirrors, they are wide and up enough to see past the top of rear quarters but don't stick out past the fender lip-tires. So folding in isn't necessary.
Spoiler alert:Resurrecting an old thread. I finally am getting around to mounting my C5 mirrors and the body work on the car isn't done yet. I mounted the passenger side and it seems to me that it should have gone a few inches further forward, not concerned about covering up the original holes. It seems that the trailing edge of the C5s is about 2 inches further back than the original sport mirrors using the old holes. So the question is, for those of you who have done this mod, are you happy with the placements of the mirrors, or do you have to turn your head a bit more to see out of them? Not a big deal, but since I am drilling holes....
Looking into this for whatever c3 i get
i wonder, this seems like a good opportunity for someone to make a kit, especially a pre-made harness cut to length with those cadillac switches and the switch plate ready to mount
Can these be electrochromic? Auto dimmin? i recall the C6 having electrochromic mirrors, the hard part being identifying which mirrors have that feature and which ones don't
also, corvette mods has the c6 mirrors with auto dimming....for $930 for left and right https://www.corvettemods.com/C6-Corv...ns_p_8280.html
which honestly seems like gouging to me, considering a pair of the non auto dim mirrors are $200
Please read the reviews of Corvette Mods on this site and others before you order from them.
I have my mirrors in the stock location. If I were to do it again, I would probably move them forward a couple of inches. They work fine where they are, and installation was easier there, but after I mounted them it occurred to me that they sweep back a few inches and so for the glass to be in the same place, they could have gone forward a bit.
They work fine where they are and there is no way I would move them now that the car is painted.

interesting. could the mounting still work when replacing the chrome mirrors, if they were moved forward a bit? wouldn't that expose one of the mounting holes for the chromes?
or would it work just fine, you're drilling the same number of holes, just further forward, and the base still covers everything?
If you moved it forward you would have the holes exposed from the original mirrors. We were already doing a lot of body work and painting so it would not have been a big deal for me, but if your car is done, it would be a lot of work/time/money to move them forward.
doing more digging into c6 mirrors, the option code for auto dimming side mirrors on those cars was DD0
only the driver side mirror actually dims, the passenger side does not.
however i read some murmurs about the dimming action being controlled by a central unit, NOT by a sensor embedded in the side mirror itself...
is this true? For people that have done this conversion and supplied power to your mirrors , do they dim?

The sensor is incorporated in the interior rear view mirror. Unfortunately it would need to be installed as well.
What about the central unit that Kokeitch mentioned? Is it incorporated into the rear view mirror as well? I thought it was really cool having C6 mirrors on my C3 and even cooler that they are electrically remoted on both sides. Auto dimming remotely controlled???? Who will be the first to do that?
Here's my install so far. (This is my 5 years-and-running-project.) This forum is great. I'm not doing the auto-dimming. Nor do I have the power control hooked up yet. (my idea...not a plan yet..is to put joystick controller in my 74 console/gauge bezel where the fasten seat light is. we'll see how that goes.)
It's an old thread, I know. But did anyone ever install power wires and mount the switch in a pre-1977 car? If yes, can you please post pictures of the switch location?
OR for those that installed the mirrors, did you just install the mirrors and "set it and forget it" since in most cases we're the only ones who drive the car?
I'm about to install dash and am trying complete wire harness mods.
I'm finally getting around to this project since I've had to fix, modify, replace the mirrors on my 76 several times for various reasons. The final straw was a falling branch snapped my passenger mirror off at the ball joint leaving the stem..
I finally found a switch I like and figured out the mirror mounting needs to be moved forwards to put mirror glass in same general spot which I can only reuse one hole. switch location has yet to be determined but probably on the center console somewhere to make wiring easier.. I'm using the standard OEM replacement mirrors for a 05-09 Corvette. The switch is from a Ford 00-03 Escape.
How many relays? One for just the switch or one for each mirror?
Here is what I've gotten so far with continuity testing. Can any of you wiring geniuses help me out by filling in the blanks?
those honda del sol mirrors look very close and are 100 bucks a set instead of 500 on up. and now finding 05-09 vette mirrors on amazon for 150 a pair. repop, of course.

Heard a zap ⚡ while trying to figure out the wiring. Now some continuity no longer works.. so I know people have used the GM dorman switch and a smaller ford switch.. anyone happen to know the Ford switch part number and have a wire diagram?
I did this very swap on my 80 last year. I used the C5 Mirrors and if I was to do all over again I would of used the C6 because as said they are a little bit taller. With the C5 Mirrors You can see over and around the rear fenders of the car but the majority of the Mirror is still filled with Fender. The install is very easy but like all of these swaps its the details that hold You up. The Gasket that goes between the Mirror and the door is not avalable new so If You don't get these with a used pair your out of luck. There are a couple of diffrent versions of these Mirrors and the wireing changes a bit between the era's. The later ones are Heated. They are all of coarse power ajusted. The Glass is not all that good and they delaminate pretty easy. The little Motors fail and its easy to break new Glass installing them. If I was to do it all over again I would probably just buy everything new, they are avalable from Corvette Central and others. So You are going to need a switch to run them and the best solution is to use the 81-82 Switch and just put in the Stock spot under the Parking Brake handle. Only problem is that this switch is a Corvette only one, they didn't come in diffrent cars, and they didn't make that many and they are prone to fail. Looking for one I found used ones to be selling for $300. The C5-6 Switch would be easy but I didn't like it, its got a seperate L-R and then the Joy stick. Its made to fit a door panel bezel, not a console. I used the late C4 Switch, its real simple, a single Joy stick and you just twist it left or right for each mirror. I put it in the 81-82 location, I removed the Trim Plate and bonded it to the bottom of the Console. You would never know it wasn't stock. You will probably have to dimple the Transmission Hump a bit for the Plug. Getting the corect Plugs can prove difficult as per all plugs on modern cars, I ended up getting a Complete Wireing Harness for C5 Doors on e-bay. However cutting the Plugs off and Soldering the Wires would work fine to. I set up both Mirrors and the Joystick on my work bench and made everything work before transfering it to the Car. I figured that would be the hardest part but it went pretty well. I ended up having a lot of Wireing Color Changes, One of my Mirrors is an early one and one late, my door harness had a color code of its own, and no the C4 Joy stick dosn't match any of them either. As far as the Heated Mirrors I drew the Line and didn't even bother. The Mounting area of the Mirror is larger than the C3, and You will need to Drill some new Holes. Because its larger it will cover up the old Holes, and no Paint Work or body work will need to be done on the Door. The Stock Studs and Nuts are the right lenght, and don't hit the Glass.
Hey, the wiring on this project? Do have a schematic of it. I'm trying to use the original wire harness and switch on my 81. I have after market C6 mirrors. They have 5 wires and the original harness from car has 3 wires. Any info would be a step forward and very much appreciated.
