Default Tune Up Question

How do you tell whether plug wires need to be changed and any recommendation on replacement type or name brand for an 82?

If you know the age, if they look damaged, if you see arcing at night, if you can check them with ohmeter or scope, or grab them while barefoot in the grass. If bad words come out of your mouth, it's time to replace the wires.

Run the engine late at night in a very dark location. Raise the hood and look. If you see arcing it's time to replace. Try this at different engine speeds and look very closely, some arc's are small and hidden by other parts. The darker it is the better. WARNING - Watch out for the fan when you have your head close to the engine, its easy to get lost in your search for sparks and forget the engine is running. I've seen "Christmas trees" in engine compartments when the engine seems to be running fine.

I use an Ohm meter. A good wire will measure around 10K, and be OK up to around 15K. But, above 15K and the wire should be replaced, or at least the end trimmed back and the connector freshly crimped on. If you need wires, then do yourself a favor and get a custom kit that includes 8 plug connectors, 8 distributor connectors, and about 60' of wire...you cut your own wire, thread it through the radio interference shielding and attach the connectors to the end's. I think every set that I've seen which is supposed to be pre-cut to fit properly are too short.
