Default Body mount replacement

I need to replace the body mounts. I found the 2 in the rear of the car which do not look too hard to replace, but I didn't look too hard for the ones in the front and I was wondering how hard it of a job this is?

All depends. Some guys get them off no problem, others, such as me, got one out NORMALLY and the rest had to be cut & grinded.

Spray them down with penetrating oil twice a day for at least a few days before attempting. If they come loose they're not to bad, if they don't, the location makes it interesting to use the above methods.

BTW, if you aren't familiar, you have 1 set of mounts in the engine bay on the far outside of the car against the firewall, you have a set behind the kick panels on the interior just in front of the doors, and a set behind a small access plate in the front of the rear wheel wells, and the set that you posted.

GL!

Do a search as well. There are quite of few recent threads regarding the mounts with tips & tricks, etc.

There are mounts under the radiator support as well. I don't know why nobody ever mentions them.
If you have no rotten steel on the body mounts, you may be able to unhook everthing that connects the frame to the body and jack it up several inches to change out just the rubber bushings and mounting bolts.
Careful. It's easy to get the "while I'm at it" disease and end up with a huge project you never planned to do.
We've all been there...........

I don't know what you might be talking about, but I'm in the middle of a frame off and there are NO mounts under the radiator support. The radiator support is actually connected to the body and lifted off with it.

My knowledge is not comprehensive. On my '74, there are two bolts holding the radiator support to the frame. Perhaps the design changed, year to year.

Hi, I did a body mount replacment on my 81. Did alot of research. I have word document that shows alot of detail on getting the job done.

If you send me a private message I will send a copy to you. It was atough job. I had to replace brackets on most of the mounts. Once you have the info and have questions let me know. PM since I don't know how to attach a Wrod doc to this post.

OK, I get where you are coming from. YES there are several other locations that have to be unbolted, etc. to lift the body, BUT they are not "Body Mounts". Body mounts are the specific 8, 4 on each side, rubber or urethane mounts.

The other stuff, bumper brackets, etc. are just pain in the a** filler to get the job done

Hope you received the doc's sent.

A couple of tips.

1. The mounts infront of the rear tire may require that you cutout the area around the inspection panel. If so cut the cutout large enough to get a good look at the mount. The cutout can be put back like new.

You might look at buying at imact wrench. I used a Harbor frt. electric. Hepled alittle. My bolts werereally rusted bad.

If brackets are rusted. Mark areas by drilling pilot holes along side the bracket. Small holes. Marking doesn't work, wears off.

Check the rear mount for cracks in the glass. Repair first with glass cloth and resin.

Lossen all screws, bolts holding body to frame. check this carefully.

Count the shims as you take them out. write down number.

If the other mounts look like the one in the photo you posted, I'm not sure why you want to change them.

The one in the pic looks pretty good for its age.

I've seen worse mounts that that. If that's the worst I would leave it alone until the next paint job. IMHO

You guys are great! Thanks for all of the replies.

I think I will wait on doing these. These were a "while I am at it" part that can wait. I am halfway through rebuilding the trailing arms and noticed these.

Thanks again!

You run a significant risk of doing 'incidental damage' to things when you start working on 40+ year-old equipment. If the body mounts are solid and not broken, I'd leave leave 'em alone.

Nope. Body mounts are Not Unless I Absolutely, 100%ly, Have To" parts. Not "While I'm at it..." parts.

Trust me on this.

Default Body mount replacement doc.

Hi, Several forum members have requested a doc I have regarding body mount replacement. I think I answered the requests. If I did not reply pls email me and I will send the doc

My email address is tgriffo418@aol.com..

Regarding the need to replace body mounts. I would check the mounts that are hidden in front of the rear wheels. Those could get could rusted bad. Since they are enclosed and moisture does get in there.

Replacing mounts are a matter of need. The other reason is cleaning up the underside of your vette. In my case the mounts were shot, brackets rusted.

The underside now looks real clean and detailed.
