Default piston tops

Hi everyone.
I am in the process of changing the heads on my BB. When I pulled the 'old' heads, the pictures you see are what I saw. The engine has around 500 miles or so of light running. The plugs and valve heads all look tannish but that may be a benefit of a recent tune.

Comp ratio 10.3, really lopey Edelbrock cam, two four-barrels, GM ...188 heads.

The black is about a 16th thick and is soft and gummy. About like 3 day old chewing gum. It cleans fairly easily and Gummout takes any residue off.

What do you guys think? Thanks for looking and thanks in advance for your input.

Langg

Bound to get some with a lumpy cam and idling wont hurt anything Id leave it. More WOT! Dont think youll take apart too many cammed motors and not see some carbon buildup

If its super super oily might wanna check intak gasket seal..were valve seals done recently how are the guides?

New guides and seals at the same time. How would an intake gasket seal affect all eight cylinders so equally?

Carb is running way rich. All that black 'stuff' is carbon from unburned fuel left over in the combustion process. Lars [Grimsrud] has some tips on how to determine if your car is idling 'rich' or 'lean' and he may have some info on how to set A/F mixture for cruise conditions, without having to resort to more expensive technology [ie, O2 sensors/A/F meter].

I suggest that you send him an e-mail at V8FastCars@msn.com and ask him for assistance and/or any papers he may have to guide you on setting the carb mixture better.

That's what it looks like to me. Better rich than lean. But a little to much, unless you're racing it and running up the RPMs. In my opinion.
