I am taking my car apart for paint and need to know how to take out the whole headlight assembly at once. Also I pushed them up by hand now how do I manually close them? The lines are not hooked up any more.
Hi,
It's quite a difficult job to remove the entire head light mechanism and frame without damaging the edges of the headlight doors or headlight openings in the hood surround. It's even more difficult to get them back in place without damaging your new paint.
Depending on what caliber paint job you're treating your car to, you may want leave them in place. If you disconnect the actuator rod clevis from the headlight mechanism you'll be able to open and close the doors easily and your painter will be able to paper and tape as he sees fit.
Whatever you decide to do I wouldn't do ANYTHING without having the 68 Assembly Instruction Manual in front of me.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan
You guys were right it is a challenge but I did get the whole assembly out to night with a few scratches around the edges. I had taken the grills and bumper off. Next which was the biggest challenge of taking the radiator support out. 3.5 hrs on this one. It had never been out and some of the bolts were complete rust. Next unbolt the u shaped surround 3 bolts on the top one on a bracket on the bottom. The unbolt the headlight stop. Next put the light down turn 90 degrees and slide out through the engine compartment. I also had to unbolt the horn. Now that its out I took off the the top for paint. When I put it back in I will bolt the u shape surround in the slide the top in place then tighten the Allen set screws and the pivot on the inside of the lights. I will keep you posted. I started tearing the car down yesterday for a restrore. I have gone back and forth on pulling the body off.
...I have gone back and forth on pulling the body off...
FWIW: Unless 100% necessary, never separate a factory installed body from the frame. You can do a very thorough restoration without separating the two.
I have decided not to pull the body off. I spent most of the day taking off the sidepipes and unbolting tranny/drive shaft to pull the engine. It sure is tough tearing apart a car that drove well and look good to begin with. I am just corvette crazy and want to make it better.
