Default 1977 engine compartment HELP

I will be checking out a 77 L48 auto with ac, and could use as reference some detailed photos of the engine and the engine compartment.

I don't want to press my luck by asking for too much, but any other advice and/or photos etc., you can offer is appreciated. I just want to be better able to identify what should be on an original 77. Thanks.

This is good. Worth the price of a copy.

Dirty, but.....

When I have a question about this generation I've been relying on the Black Book, and info from the forum. Since other questions are, and more will be coming up, that fact book sounds like a good idea. Thank you. And thanks for that pic.

The picture Mike posted is of an L-48 engine. An L-82 will look somewhat different.

Your best bet is to post up a couple pictures of the engine in the car, on the Forum. Forum members can look it over for you. This would be better than you guessing what's right, based on some pictures of other cars.

Is this the same smoke interior car, that you were looking at before?

Thanks, and you are right about posting engine pics first. I would, except I do not have any. And yes, it's the same 77. I'll be seeing it for the first time on Sunday, and I was hoping to have a visual in my mind so I might see if there's something noticeably askew.

The seller seems honest enough, and I have an ok comfort level so far. He sent some extra pics (but didn't send engine pics I asked for), and he sent the VIN. From what he said he's pretty busy coaching HS and I know how time consuming that can be from when I was a Little League coach. I'll see soon enough.

Hi 66,
One GENERAL thing to notice when looking at a supposedly mostly ORIGINAL engine compartment, (and Mike's picture clearly shows it), is that everything, or almost everything, is in the SAME condition.
This often is an indicator about how much the car has been, (or not been), messed with.
Yes, some things MAY need to be replaced (like hoses, belts, wires) but it's a good first indicator.
A beautifully clean compartment is great to see, but a compartment as his picture shows may actually tell you more about the car.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan

That makes a lot of sense. I copied Mike's photo and one I downloaded from a Barrett-Jackson auction. They are the same, and guess which one is cleaner than the other. I'll study and have both with me. Thanks for the input.

The Black Book is great. I carry a copy around in my briefcase, but the BB is scarse on pics.

Dr. Dobbins' book is good for reference photos.

In the pic I posted, it's looks like the owner has a noise trap on the left fender skirt. It isn't stock.

Hi Mike,
I noticed that too... what's a 'noise trap'?
Is it like a 'speed trap', but for cars that are too loud?

Alan

WOW !! thats nice !!!

Dirty doesn't mean much to me except somebody didn't give a rats zzz about their car...I 'd go for this one every time over the rust/oil bucket.

my car is as original as anybodys and it is clean...... so I don't buy the notion look for a uncared for car idea.

My hunch is that the owner was getting a whine from the alternator. That's only a guess. It kinda resembles a beer can.

Nice engine. One difference is the OP has an L48 which did not come with the air pump and associated hoses.

How are you Alan? I think that is a capacitor used to filter/store voltage to a high output stereo system amp.. I have seen them hooked up to the 12V power coming off the alternator. mike...

BKbroiler. Thanks for the info. I was not sure about that.

Great suggestions. In addition, pull the air cleaner (ask permission) and look at the driver's side rear of the carb and shoot a picture of the numbers. This will indicate whether this carb more than likely came with the car and its date code. The numbers will be vertical.

Default Update

If the ride to see this car (75 one-way) wasn't so mind-clearing, and the roads so winding and fun (I took my '03 AE) this trip would have been a bust. People should look in the dictionary before they use the word "excellent" in their ads. And when they describe the car in a conversation, a Thesaurus would come in handy.

I'm getting used to being disappointed though. Of well, the search continues.

Thanks to all for the help and advice.
