not being there or seeing it run, hard to say.
from your description it is either a jumped chain or major carb failure.

I'm really thinking carb because when my brother manually played with choke opening and closing it , it was trying to start. So i think I was flooding it in the process with how much I was trying to start it

Now here is another thing i forgot to mention. the electric choke has never worked. it would never close. it stays open all the time even on starts,. My brother came to help me tonight and was closing the choke and opening it as i was turning it over and it kept sounding like it was trying to fire. I am starting to believe this is carb issue but what throws me off is the fact that it fired up right after the distributer work was complete and it fired on second crank right away.. any thoughts????
Let the car sit over night.
Then without cranking the engine pump the gas to see if it pumps any gas in the throttle body. Try max 2 pumps. If it doesn't then its leaking gas some where in the carb. Then crank the engine for about 10 sec. and re test. If there is still no gas I would check your gas lines for a break. If you get gas from the start and it runs until it stalls it may be getting to much fuel which points to a carb float problem, or some other fault. Do you have another carb for testing ?

New update. Whole distributor has been. COmpletely replaced with a new one and at first it would crank and backfire through carb then found out we were 180 degrees off then tried to get it closer and then it now backfires and sputters through exhaust....I'm losing my patience

sorry for your troubles.
get back to basics.
firing order
TDC
static base timing.
base timing is not critical, firing order and TDC are.

Check your carb/manifold gasket. If its in backwards, motor will crank but it will stumble.

I thought he was using a new dist?
I wanted to warn about off the shelf dist and
issues with advance.
hope he changes out his orig pick up coil and uses the OE dist.
