leave the old rad in.
buy a back flush kit at Walmart. install
put 2 cans preston flush.
run and then use back flush tee.

THEN remove old rad.
make sure heater is on.

You can even go further than that. Pull the block drain plugs and the water pump and blast the bottom of the water jacket with a garfen hose. Should probably replace the pump anyway, along with t-stat, cap and hoses. You can easily blast out the heater core, remove both hoses and flush both ways.

Hello thanks for your help, my repair manual does not tell me were the block drain is on a 1974 coupe, I did not want to send all the old crud in the old rad. back into the motor with chemicals???? Rich outttt.

There's a drainplug on both sides of the block, about in the middle, right above the oil pan
