Let me restate my question. I have a 1973 steering box. I purchased a kit from Zip and it came with 56 ball bearings. most of the articles i have read say use 54 ***** and one article
Might the "modern" repair kit use a slightly smaller ball....thus requiring 2 more than the factory used? One never knows what those foreign aftermarket parts factories put in their boxes....
Someone would have to measure them with a micrometer to be sure.
I'm rebuilding the box out of my 70. It's the original box, never been opened. I re-installed the ball nut & 54 ***** after cleaning but it's not in it's "final" assembly stage... it was just a "trial fit". It seems to me that I could have squeezed a few more ***** in there. I'll check.
