Default Transmission Tunnel Insulation

Any way to get this thing mounted without dropping the transmission? Have access to a lift.

Probably... whether it's simply form fitted, yet pliable material or hard material would be the determining factor

Would be interested in this too, I think the hard part would be the retainer clips, how do they connect to the underside?

IF . . . . it were me, I would pull the transmission.

It's not a pliable material...and I think the clips get pushed through it and bent over in order to secure it. This one might have to wait, not ready to drop the transmission.

You need to drop the tranny to properly install the tunnel insulation. It's too stiff to work over the tranny unless you break it inside the foil covering, and then you've kind of defeated the purpose. :-)

I just installed this insulation and there is really NO way to do it with the trans installed.
Now the question I have is does the insulation go in BEFORE the positive battery cable or after?

I installed the insulation first and the cable after as that seemed to make the insulation fit more tightly to the tunnel (the insulation was missing on my car so I had nothing to go by..

Battery Cable was originally routed under the insulation.

Hi,
The tunnel insulator has rectangular cutout in it that the shifter mechanism passes through.
In order to over come that, the insulator would need to be slit open so the insulator could be 'rotated' into position.
If you took the shifter and it's bracket off it might help.
There's really very little clearance between the transmission and the fiberglass tunnel.... I don't think you can do it.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks for confirming Bill-
I was suspecting that but AIM doesn't indicate one way or another.
I chose to put the cable in after installing the insulation for several reasons.
  • I need all the clearance I can get for my SS700 trans install.
  • Putting the cable in after helps keep the insulation in place because the cable mounts hold the insulation between the cable and tunnel.
  • I upgraded my battery cable from the OEM 4 gauge to 00 gauge and the extra thickness would have kept the insulation even further away from the tunnel.

I tried, couldn't make it happen. Just lots of time wasted laying under the car trying to figure out if it could be done.

just did the tunnel insulation this weekend, the motor and transmission are removed from car.this is a do it now project, while you can get in there.i also replaced the four insulation retainers as the original ones seen better days,so the console and e brake cover get removed and pull back the carpet to gain access to the rivets.and while i am at it, put in new battery cable and clamps and the threaded stud clamp mounts.now that its done correctly i will not have to go back in there.

I always hated that insulation so last time I had the transmission out I put that aluminized tape you can get at any home depot for ducting on the underside of the tunnel. With semi-flat black paint on it it's not noticeable. I left the insulation out and I haven't noticed any heat from the tunnel.

Thanks guys. Will get the insulation in there the next time the transmission is out. Could be a while. Got the foam collar in there for now at least, might help a bit.

How is that foam collar held in place?

I put it in from the top behind the distributor and inched it very close to where it should be. It's a snug interference fit in there...it isn't going anywhere. The insulation is not very thick, maybe 1/4" or so, so it doesn't do much more to assist with holding it in place.

Is the foam collar supposed to butt up to the tunnel insulation or be on top of the tunnel insulation?
AIM doesn't show the relationship of the two-
Thanks!
