Default Hood Won't Catch

G'day All,
Im having trouble with my hood not catching on the right side after remounting. I have centered the pins (see photos), there is no tension in the cable, but the hood will still not catch.

Left catch.

Right catch.

Does anyone have some insight for rectifying this problem?

Thanks for any help.

Mark

Are the hood pins adjusted to the right height, so the latch lever can get under them? Don't know your situation, just a thought.

Yeah, the pin is screwed almost all the way out, so the latch should be able to slide under.
By the way it's just the right one that won't catch.

Thanks,

Mark

When you say there is almost no tension in the cable, exactly what do you mean? Which cable, the hood release cable in the car's interior or the latch lever cable on the hood? Just want to be sure it's the latch cable.

Maybe try loosening the nuts that hold the hood pin/tension spring and move the assembly toward the curved leading edge of the latch. You want the pin centered on the line that represents the radius of the curve on the latch edge when the latch is engaged. This location isn't necessarily the center of the hole in the latch plate and hood.

If you took your hood off and nothing else changed, it seems that it is not back in the same place as it was. Is the gap on either side of the hood to the fender the same (hood centered)? You could loosen up the 6 hood hinge bolts and move the hood around while it's closed. If you get it to latch in some position, see where the hood needs to go from there to get it centered between the fenders. If re-locating the hood, moves the latch closer or further away from the pin, you have to move the pin assembly accordingly.

This adjustment is incredibly sensitive. I've had my present Vette for 20 years, every time I hit a RR track, bump or quick undulation in the road, the right side of the stock hood would release, inspite of numerous trys at adjusting it. At some point, I finally got it right and you could run over a cow and the latch stayed engaged. Same with the L88 hood I have now.

Good luck.

I took look at my hood latches. From the marks on them, the pin is pretty muck centered on the driver's side, but the passenger-side one is definitely moved toward the latch. I took a photo of it. When it's approved, you can see it by clicking on "My Corvette Photos".

G'day Super6,
To clarify the tension on the cable, I was talking about the cable between the latches and the only tension on the cable is what is created by gravity.
I look forward to seeing your photo.

Thanks, Mark
