I agree.
The size of the rod is so small compared to the massive center bumper support that it would have no 'impact' on an 'impact'!
It's the ANGLE at which the rod connects to the front clip reinforcement that gives the added stability to the forward part of the clip and the headlights.

Thank you, Alan. I just wanted to mention, that my company MTD made the outer (dog leg) bumper braces, for 68-82 corvettes. The 68-69 braces are different and are not being reproduced now. The strange thing is that they do not come up to the height of the outer bumper nut. It is easier to get at the bolts, because they are off-set. The 70-72 are higher and are at the same height as the outer bumper nut location. The offset 68-69 outer bumper braces will allow the bumper to turn up in the center if you hit something. Don't ask me how I know this! My calipers leaked and I bumped a car and the front bumper twisted up at a 45 degree angle. Lou.
