Default Cam for stock setup

I'm looking to swap out my stock cam (in 80 c3). And like the sound of the thumper cam, I don't believe the thumper cam will work for my setup.. I'm going to change the intake to edelbrock air-gap(all ready on hand) With te cam change.

Anyone have cam suggestions? Might go with a roller.

Have1.6 rr, 350turbo trans (all stock), edelbrock 600cfm carb, and lt headers

There are multiple Thumper cams, why do you think it wont work for you? The 279 would and the 283 depends on your rear gears.

Was told that the thumper requires vaccum canisters for the braking system. I'm not willing to mess around with the brakes.
Are you running that cam without the added cans?

No I dont have that cam but why dont use just ask Competition Cams directly, I cannt imagine the 279 or 283 would cause that issue. The person who told you this, did they say which of the Thumper cams caused this?

No we reached it together on the net. Didn't thing to ask compcam directly. Didn't know they would offer that kind of support. Thanks for the tip.

Even with a cam that doesn't have a lot of idle vacuum, (mine), the brakes still work just fine. The headlights are a little slow, but who's timing them anyway?

i dont think you are supposed to pick a cam because it will sound cool. be careful with the 1.6 rockers if you are using stock heads. the pushrod holes will need to be clearanced. if your engine is basicly stock you dont have a ton of options. some of the larger lift and duration cams will need more compression, stall and higher numerically gearing. look at the comp cams he268 or xe262 cams. without all the matching components, picking the wrong cam can make your car run worse than stock.

I put a Summit 1103 cam and lifter kit in my 81 it gave me the Thumper lopey sound I was looking for. I also changed the carb to a Edelbrock 1406 and put in a Summit distributor. Love the way it sounds now. Seems to have more power from a seat of the pants Dyno too.

I believe the air gap will require a low profile air cleaner to clear the hood...(edelbrock actually states it won't clear the standard c3 hood from what I read).. they are also designed for 1500-6500 rpm power and which might me a bit high for lower rpm higher torque cam you'all want for the gearing and converter you have...
The 274 thumper should work for brakes but barely... and you will want new heads at least to make it worth it. You can go with something like procomps from eBay for $600.00 which will boost your compression to work with the cam and boost power...
I sold the Thumpr 274 I had in favor of the old tried and true 268he cam which will work better with the weak gearing and is more efficient at the cost of the thumprs cool idle sound.

In all honestly the 1406 is not a performance Carb... its a smaller (600cfm) than stock (750cfm) and its tuned for fuel economy with smaller lean jetsd... the 1405 is the 600cfm performance version... you may see a big improvement over what youve already gained with a different carb especially if your at WOT.
I have a 1405 myself and even though my builds not done I'm on the fence about going with something like a 650-700....
