Default 71 center console removal

Noob question.
removing center console to replace Fiber optic plate and lens as well as heater face (4-speed no AC). I have everything lose, but the two levers that control the side vents and the associated cable are the last items preventing the removal of the console. The levers are still connected to heater control support frame and it appears their cables are attached to the console itself.
Any advice on how to remove? I have the AIM, but there is no detail on this.:confused

On my '69 the two levers I think you are talking about are held on with two tiny set screws on their sides. You need a hex wrench and they should come off easily. But, then again, you may be talking about the cables themselves, which I have not ever removed.

Thanks Ralph,
I couldn't see a hex head fitting, but the metal covered in dirt and rust. Will clean and check.

I believe they are 1/4" hex head screws and they hold a couple of plastic brackets to the [metal] body of the control housing. Those plastic brackets also have a small tab that fits thru a hole in that housing plate, so be careful pulling it off. Difficult disassembly and difficult assembly.

I removed the (2) very small screws that secure the AC controls to the bracket that it rests on.

Now loosen the nuts that are below the radio, on the studs that protrude down from the guage console. These are tough to get to. Stand on your head, remove side panels at front of console and get at it that way. I sometimes get my daughter or wife who have much smaller hands.

Once these are loose you can remove the console, leaving the AC controls in place.

Good luck, be patient.

Hi v,
The information on removing the vent ***** and the vent cables themselves is shown in the AIM: UPC 1 asm, Sheet E10. View A.
It IS a little tricky!
Regards,
Alan
