I'm restoring a 69 conv. and got the new windshield in today. The wiper door assembly and top dash pad have not been installed yet. Is there any reason not to install the windshield? Thanks
the dash pad is soooooo much easier to install with glass out but you must be careful when putting the glass in that none of the sealant gets pushed up onto the dash pad or it will mold to it and cause problems. Definately leave wiper try door off when installing glass!
Professionally/ personally...Do not install the top dash pad because it is not that big of a deal to install. At least for me they are very easy....and not only that...I do not have to worry about damaging anything if it is not installed.
The main thing I can advise you on is that make sure that if it is you, or someone else installing it. Make sure that the windshield frame is correctly prepped/primed for using the windshield sealant/urethane.....and that you might want to do a pre-fit...so you can install all moldings and see how much shim material or wedges is/are needed so when the windshield is installed...and the moldings are installed. The gap between the windshield and moldings are visually pleasing and not excessive....ESPECIALLY at the upper outer corners of the glass in the corners. I am SUPER PICKY when I install windshields because I do not want a gap between the glass and the trim that you can park a bus inside of....which I have seen numerous times. It does take some time to do it right..but when it is done...for me...it is worth it.
I had an auto glass company do mine. For the price, it wasn't worth the trouble of buying a windshield and doing it myself. The guys did a nice job on it too, right in my garage.
Hi Pm1,
I agree with dub that a test fit to establish how far the new windshield needs to be spaced from the windshield frame is worth the time and effort and helps insure a nice tight fit on the ss trim.
Good Luck!
