Hi S1,
I'm not too familiar with auto cars so I looked at the 71 AIM.
It appears that UPC M40, Sheet A2 shows the connection, and it has that connector plugging into what is called out as the "production inst pnl harness asm".
It appears this connection is under the shifter console but on the interior side of the transmission tunnel... so very close to the area in your picture.
Hope this helps!
Regards,
Alan
it plugs into a jack on the dash harness. the jack should emerge from the harness near the center console wires. on 4 speed cars a wire comes thru the firewall and plugs into the same dash harness jack.

I found the plug, it puts the backup lights on without it being in backup?? Looking at a few other posts it looks like the new wire harnace is incorrect. See picture I think I need to reverse the wires on the harnace and all should be OK - but - thought I would check with all to make sure. ANOTHER update: REVERSED THE wires, it now works correctly?? Wow.
thanks for the help youall
