Default Rear wheel bearings

Hello folks. Tonight I was installing my new rear rotors, the old ones were wore way too thin, po run the pads right to the metal. I torqued them to spec to check the runout, and while I was checking found that the rear bearings are too loose, about .030 wobble up and down according to my dial indicator. Hmm,, now what do I need to do? That doesn't look to easy to fix, any guesses , suggestions? Thanks for any replies.

Remove the bearing carrier from the trailing arm, and send it to Van Steel to be rebuilt. They did mine more than 20 years and 75,000 miles ago.

Or go for it and do it yourself. Lots of Harleys running around on basically the same setup. It's not that hard.

If you measured the play in the vertical plane (12 and 6 o'clock) measure it again in the horizontal before you go any further.

I have vertical play in my rear wheels but no play horizontally.

So IMO this can't be bearings because bearing play would be the same for the 360 degrees.

What should I be looking for?

End play on the diff yokes. The 0.030" you measured is normal. Nothing to worry about.

Did you measure installed run-out on the new rotors? Most times that will exceed the factory 0.008" spec.

You will need to fabricate or buy the set-up tool so you can pre-set the bearings before you grease and install them. It is not a hard job but it is precise. I do numerous rear wheel bearings yearly and it amazes me on how many need "something" extra. I would also advise checking the spindle to make sure it is true also. I check the spindles before installation and have found many to be whacked and not right...thus causing the reading on the rotor to be excessively out even though the bearing run-out is correct.

I haven't got the big picture yet Mike.

When I lift the rear wheels from 6:00 to 12:00 I get vertical play. From 3:00 to 9:00 it's solid.

I can feel movement occurring (6:00 to 9:00) on the inside of the wheel where it meets up with the yoke side of the 1/2 shaft.

Is this normal?

From my readings this rear wheel vertical play is connected by way of the 1/2 shaft to differential and wear in that area. Like the clutch pack, yoke and ends on the splines at the C clip .

Am I on the right track ?
