bolted right in. You need the right flywheel, pilot bearing and throw out bearing. I used a 16021 from McLoed altough I think that was a closeout. There are adjustables. Also had to break the weld on the inner z-bar arm and move it inboard a bit as I remember. Completely stock from the bellhousing back and I saved a lot of money and grief.
If you are running fuel injection on the LS, I would go with a 6 speed. It will have the torque to run a double overdrive at lower RPM, and you can enjoy the full LS experience. But, it depends what you expect out of the change - using an existing trans will work. Putting a carb on the LS would probably work better with the 4 speed.
My DD is a 72 Olds 442 with an LS, T10, and 2.73 rear.
LS motors with sequential port injection are set up to run very efficiently at low rpm, so OD trans work better for hiway mileage.
But everything you need to know about mating an LS to a Muncie/T10, etc. http://ls1tech.com/forums/conversion...-ls-motor.html
T 56 - I used one from a 1999 Camaro, the bonus was it came with a factory Hurst Shifter - used the stock 2004 C5 hyd clutch, NO issues has been working fine ever since.
They use the t-56 in so many cars, newer gtos, cobras, vipers, vettes and a few others. I was looking into getting the ls and t56, but I wanted to keep it look some what original. So I just rebuilt my top end and about to overhaul my th400. But yeah, they make an overhaul kit for the t56 too if you want to boost the power above 500.
A F body LS1 T56 is probably the easiest to swap in. The Cadillac and GTO versions & non GM have their differences. The LT1 version is not as good, and again is more trouble. In the last few years the T56 was replaced by TR6060, so most T56s will have miles on them, and may need a freshening. TR6060 has lots of changes - Much higher torque rating, divorced shifter, internal pump, output shaft, ect. The aftermarket TR6060 is the T56 Magnum, and is set up for a easier swap.
