Got my engine out (454) and took the exhaust manifold in for a repair at the mounting hole. The shop I took it to thinks they can weld, surface and redrill the broken part. What has been your experience with manifold repairs?
I don't mind to pony up for a replacment part but I'm trying to restore and keep the original parts on the car when able.
seabright is correct. As long as the welding shop or person has the correct rod to weld the cast manifold....there is no need to do a pre-heat and post heat cool down when welding cast iron. or at least that is what my good friend who is a professional welder says. I think...if my memory serves me correctly that is requires a high nickel rod for welding cast iron.
Date codes are not used in judging points for correct manifolds.
By the time it is welded and surfaced, because they do not use gaskets?
I would either buy a new NAPA for $129 or get a used.
My dad was a certified welder until he retired. He fixed a lot of cast iron. He always heated the metal and used a nickel rod. They're expensive, around $5 each.
Brazing cast iron is the best method I know...particularly because of the high temp of the exhaust manifold. But, I do not have familiarity with the use of nickel rod.
