Looking at the possibility of running a in tank electric fuel pump. Stock mechanical is not giving me the fuel volume that I need and currently the body is off the frame so this is the time to get everything set up for fuel injection. Currently using a carburetor but I am going to switch to fuel injection later. So can I use my stock pick up and just install a in tank pump just like a 1982 corvette, or even use the 1982 sending unit and use that? The pump I was thinking about using is a Aeromotive AEI-11169. I believe this would work but I have not ever seen a 82 fuel sending unit other than photos. My other concern is that there is not any baffling in the tank, did a 1982 tank have baffling?
I have not noticed one in a 82 gas tank....like I have seen in the 84-96 Corvettes. I have done what you are planning. I did it to a 78...I built a baffle that was attached to the sending unit and used a fuel pressure regulator due to still maintaining the carburetor. Also I kept the fuel pump on the engine and removed the drive rod to the fuel pump and did A trick to the fuel pump so it will allow fuel to flow through it unobstructed when it was mounted back on the engine ...so all fuel lines could still be in place and look factory.
I did it because I installed the anti-theft system out of a 1989 with the "chip" in the key and needed a way to shut off fuel and starter so it could not run for long if it were "hot-wired"....and it would only run as long as the fuel in the carb's bowl would allow....which was only a few seconds.

Thank you for the information, did you have any problems with it not picking up fuel when the tank was low on fuel? Also did you use a 1982 sending unit or were you able to just cut the pick up on the 78 sending unit and attach the pump? Can you describe the baffle that you made? Again thanks for the info.
I do plan on using a return type regulator at the carburetor and thought I would make sure the return fuel sprayed the pump to keep it cool.

NO...I talked to a friend who has an 1982 and when he was working on the sending unit...he also confirmed that he did not see or have a baffle when he was inspecting and cleaning out the inside of the tank.

NO...I used a 1982 sending unit so it would have the electrical provision made into it...instead of me drilling a hole and wiring it up. Getting the correct one was the only way to go for be because my time is money...and I could not waste the time modifying a sending unit when I could do a "plug and play" thing faster.
