Has anybody used that curved foam collar that wedges between the bellhousing and the tunnel? Do they work? Did you glue it to the b/h or the tunnel? We're getting close to putting the body back on my 69 convertible and now would be the time to install that. Otherwise for the rest of the heat and sound proofing we're using dynamat.
With the transmission out, I put in the foam collar, and the aluminum foil covered insulated transmission tunnel and the foil covered plastic bubble insulation (under the carpet inside) from Lowes. You get a roll of the Lowes stuff and cut to fit, cheaper than dynamite in my opinion.
Also check for air leaks in the firewall.
I put Automotive GOOP on the top and bottom edge of the foam collar and just wedged it up in there.
All of this made a big difference in the **** pit heat. Hard to tell if the foam collar by itself makes a big difference. I think if you are going to do something to control the cockpit heat, might as well do everything.
Hi wo,
I too found that the fiberglass tunnel compresses the foam collar enough to hold it in place without any adhesive.
It's easier to position it as the body is lowered back on the frame but MrJ is right, you can wedge it into position after the body is back on too.
Regards,
Alan
It doesn't need glue, if the trans is already in place. But, if not, you need a little to just keep it in place till trans is installed.
I didn't think of it at the time, when I installed mine, but it might have been a good idea to wrap that 'puppie' in some aluminum foil (to seal it and protect it) before installation. I doubt that the foam/plastic collar will live very long in that environment "as is".
From what I could tell from the AIM and from 'logic', that collar should be installed immediately behind where the cooler lines enter the trans case.

factory glued it to the bell housing. 2 1/4' back from the edge of the bell housing if I recall correctly from my research. Just had mine installed this year, definitely made a difference. Quite a bit cooler without dynomat or any special insulation.
Yes. The foam collar helps, the tunnel insulation helps. On my '74, the tunnel insulation is retained by four special clips that are riveted to the body and pierce the insulation. I was able to just snake the foam collar over the (manual) trans after everything else was installed.
I also got some stick on reflective insulation (from Jeg's) and placed it in front of and to each side of the tunnel insulation.
Every little bit helps.
