Can't believe no one picked up on this. How do you set a tps by ear. The specs for an 82 are .525 +- .05. You can only set it to within the specs by a voltmeter or a readout of error codes moving tps until the tps error codes go away. Then you are only within the .475 - .575 range, not at the best position of .525. Any, if "by ear" you can only tell if you are near spec on how engine responds when accelerating - an I don't mean WOT.

Good thought Larry, but the setting for the 82 TPS is the following:
0.525 +/- 0.075 which would give you a range of 0.450 to 0.6
i feel there were a lot of problems from the beginning. 7 yr old gas, fouled spark plugs. once I got some fresh gas in it the idle was still high (1400) and had a bad miss. then with the car running I loosened the tps and moved it around and the idle came down to about 700. still had a miss and the idle would fluctuate and even stall. checked for vac leaks, cleaned the iac's. still had a miss. put a new set of plugs in and miss was gone but it would still fluctuate the idle. I could see a new thermostat gasket and hoped someone put a 160 in it, which would explain the idle raising then coming back down. pulled stat today and it was a 195 but replaced it anyway.
replaced the original CTS with the updated 1 and the new plug. and started it up and it idles perfect at 750 and ran for a half hour and never changed.
these early cars, the CTS is a critical sensor to tell the computer what to do with the fuel which in turn corrects the idle.

that's my thoughts anyway...lol
sounds like you have corrected the problems you were experiencing...
what does it idle @ in "D"?
what is the brand & part# for the CTS? I will add that to the "sticky"
did you check the setting of the TPS with the proper tool?
and how does it feel on the road?
your thought is well taken on the CTS, as many 82 owners have stated in so many different words in previous threads on how important the CTS is for the engine to run properly.........
It idles around 600 in gear. The CTS part number is 71-2501 and you need to change the connector with a 57-4502 also. These are "standard ignition" brand from carquest auto parts. Never reset the TPS and it drives fine

No biggie Larry.......I also would like to know how he set it by ear too...
The answer is you can't. You set the TPS with the engine not running. Or, if you want to set it at idle - and I mean AT IDLE - nothing effecting idle, not IAC, nothing - you won't hear any difference well within the setting range. I have tried that and changing the setting the TPS within spec is not possible.

I hear what you are saying, it may have been he got very lucky in doing so, as he has stated, "Never reset the TPS and it drives fine"
It would be interesting to actually see what his TPS is set at by using the correct method...... But at least he is up and running and appears to have corrected the problems he had......
"pewter-FRC"....thanks for the parts #'s, will list them in the "sticky" soon.......

i would also like to check the setting on the tps. can you explain how to do this?
