The 3970010 was pretty much the standard 350 casting used for many engine options. So, it's 44 years old and only been bored .030 over once? Sounds fishy. You need to research this a lot more.
I think if I buy this it will be a learning experience as far as removing tranny and parts then lifting engine out if it blows up then I still have my original plus he's got headers carb intake for 1000 bucks it might be worth the buy and just to learn Originaly I was going to just get a shop to clean up and refresh my original heads shoot that's 1500 bucks right there
This motor might be worth it if it is fresh and never been run. But, you'll want documentation of the build. The cam came with a spec card. Get it. Does he have receipts for the parts that went into it? Does he have receipts from the shop that hot-tanked, magnafluxed, and prepped the block?
Whenever you buy a motor from a "mechanic" you run the risk that he did not know how to use a torque wrench properly, or didn't bother building it to correct specs, or did who-knows-what. But, you might get a good deal.
$1,500 is not that much for a used motor if it is complete from carb to pan, which this doesn't sound like it is. I would want documentation before dropping $1,500 on a "so he says" motor.

Yes agree he still has the motor on the test bench so ill hear it runing it's never been installed since the rebuilt I'm actually going there tomorrow and will ask all questions
That's not a turn key engine u need all the bolt on which I have plus I'm in Canada they don't issue any warranty as soon as it leaves the states and that's a 195 hp which is what 140 at the wheels
I checked prices here from gm the zz4 I wanted costs 8000 here from a dealer
Ah, I see. Your situation is a little different than it would be if you lived down here. How may horses do you think your 1500 dollar engine is going to put out? And, is that 1500 Canadian dollars? And, is the exchange rate different enough to make an appreciable difference?
See if you can get him to run a compression test on it, shouldn't take too long, if you get numbers of more than 175 or so, you'll have a pretty peppy little engine there.

Ok so this guy is selling an engine rebuilt I have talked him down to 1500 bucks would it fit my 74 coupe and just boot on ??
Here is his add
1969 350 Small Block Chevy Engine Completely Rebuilt
Bored .30 Over
New everything
390010 # Block
Heads Rebuilt and Shaved
4 Bolt Main
Flat Top Pistons
Solid Steel Crank
Standard Bearings
Mild Performer Cam
Edlebrock Performance Aluminum Intake
Edlebrock Carb
Edlebrock Aluminum Breather and Valve Covers
Does he have the receipts of the machine shop boring it 30 over and heads shaved ?
does he have the receipts for the parts , ie : heads, crank , pistons. Ask to pull the valve covers and oil pan check it out, should be spotless in the motor.
I noticed the ad for the motor did list an Edelbrock carb. Assuming it has an electric choke and is basically new, this could be a downright superb deal. It sounds like it has a 4 bolt main and possibly the factory forged crank (which is what I'm guessing the "steel crank" bit is).
What is unknown are the heads: He will probably know the casting number. Get it. I doubt it comes with the original heads, but you might get lucky. Also find out what work was done to those heads. Ported, polished, valve job? Valve sizes? That's where a lot of your power is going to come from--possibly more so than the cam. Based on all the Edelbrock parts, "mild Performer" cam might well mean the Edelbrock Performer Plus, which is indeed a mild cam--204/214 @ .050. If any porting was done to the heads, it might be worth looking into a more aggressive cam...
Well looked at it guy wasn't there his dad was started up sounded good took the valve covers off didn't pick up nothing on the magnet but engine only ran a few times for about 5 sec as there's no cooling lines to cool it
Since he couldn't tell me anything about the cam specs or heads just the flap top pistons
Has elderbrock turker manifold and carb complete engine
I offered him 800 bucks as there are parts he can't tell me what they are but said he built it for 400 hp
Well engine is in the car bolted on had a few misfits had to tap a hole for the tranny linkage on this engine also elderbrock torquer intake will not fit my quadrajet so will have to use the elderbrock it came with will. See how it runs should be done tomorrow hooking up all my connections and start her up with some break in oil hope it goes well
