Does it work fine when it is cold?

Ever change the gear oil?

Shifter ever been cleaned? They are exposed under the car to all sorts of weather and flying debris.

Clutch adjusted properly? Could the clutch not disengaging completely be an issue?

Just some random thougths.

Does it grind or does the shift lever just not want to move?

the shift lever doesn't want to move.... tranny overhauled 18 mo ago
and rarely driven in bad weather. Original equipment. Shifts fine on starting and at higher speeds going thru the gears

When your forward motion problem occurs, does it go easy into reverse,...or does it grind??

Could be lots of causes,...but...

Sounds like your input shaft might be continuing to rotate when you depress the clutch. If your input shaft is not rotating, (with the engine on or off), the syncro rings easily line up the shift collar. If all is functioning correctly, depressing the clutch SHOULD allow the input shaft to cease rotation.

Lots of things can allow the input shaft to rotate, including:

Incorrect clutch adjustment.
Old, thick sticky oil on disc.
Bad pilot bearing.
Fragmented disc material trapped.
Warped, cracked, damaged pressure plate.

Hard launches are tough on a clutch:

After I installed my new clutch, I couldnt get the car in gear without it running, and even then it was real hard to catch. After serious tinkering I found out that I just had the damn thing adjusted wrong. I had set up for little to no freeplay, which meant that my clutch wasnt even fully releasing when I pushed it in. Gave the pedal some freeplay and it made a huge difference.
