I just received a new 3.54 differential from Duntov....2 weeks with build and shipping. This is going in my 82.
PROBLEM....side yokes on new diff do not match the side yokes on the old one, they are smaller and I can't install the U-joints (cups are too big!).
I called and left a message and will speak to them tomorrow, but I'm wondering if anyone has ever heard of a U-joint with 2 different size cups? It's a stretch, but I'm hoping otherwise, this is gonna have to be shipped back and started over....major bummer this time of year in Central New York.
Anybody have any thoughts?
Thanks
Fred
Yes You could probably use a conversion u-joint. But one would think that it would only be as strong as its weakest side ( the small one). And considering that the U-joints are generally the weakest part of the early Dana 44's You may not want to go this route. At this point we might figure that You might of got an exchange rear and not your original back. By looking at the serial numbers on the bottom one can figure that out. One Option would be to just change out the Yoke Shafts for the correct ones.
Do not use a conversion u-joint on the halfshaft. It will not have the body strength.
Apparently something has changed over there, again, because I am getting flooded with re-doing their rebuilds. I just had a man bring me a pair of trailing arms that were just rebuilt by the afore mentioned company. Both arms are bent, the caliper brackets are bent, the bearings are loose, and the cheap lockwashers were all spread open.
They just lost a customer last saturday. A fairly well known Corvette restoration company in Plano, Texas. Not that I had anything to do with it, I was just standing in the right place at the right time.
