Does the standard C3 shifter have a detent spring that keeps the shifter in the 3rd 4th shift gate when in neutral or is the spring broken which allows the shifter to move from left to right in the neutral position.
The only spring your stock shiftier has is the one used for the reverse lock out portion of your shiftier. Other than that...you shifter should be able to slide left and right from 1st-2nd gate and 3rd-4th gate freely. Then when you want to go into reverse...lift up on the "t" handle and slide the shifter handler to the left for reverse. Also remember that your reverse DOES NOT have a synchronizer. So if it does not freely go into reverse..slightly move the car and it will fall into place due to your gears in the transmission are contacting on top of the gear teeth...and rolling it a little bit will move the gears and allow them to mesh...thus allowing your shifter to engage the transmission in reverse. Only reason I mentioned this is many people do not know this and wonder why it is hard for them to get the transmission to go into reverse at times.
Left-Right movement is normal. If the shifter is very sloppy in the H pattern it could be due to a small very inexpensive part being missing or bent. There is an E-clip that tightens up the shifter plates that (at least on my car) was bent to the point of almost falling off. I replaced it for ~25 cents and the shifter was noticeably tighter.
Excuse the photo. My car was the first one shipped over on the Titanic
