Default Automatic - what determines shift point at WOT?

Might be a little bit of a noob question, but under WOT, what determines the RPM shift point and how/can it be adjusted?

The governor has weights and springs that flip out and open valves to shift to the next gear. You can purchase different strength spring.

You can play with the kick down cable or the modulator on a th350 to adjust part throttle shifts.

No there is a chamber on the passenger side of the trans with a governor assembly inside. B&M transmissions sells a kit with parts to change your shift points. The old solid lifter BB cars and 70-72 Z28 Cameras had special TH400 trans with 6500rpm upshifts from GM. Even though everyone wanted a 4 speed those auto trans 70 Z28s hauled azz at the drags in the old days, high to mid 13s in the 1/4 mile by just stomping on the go pedal.

If the TV cable is set properly, there will be no effect on WOT shifts from adjusting it. WOT shifts are controlled by governor pressure....that's all. So, if you want to change WOT shift points, you have to change governor weights/springs or buy one already set up for your transmission.

Good information - thanks guys!
So, if I'm happy with my shift points now, changing the engine won't change them - yes?

Changing your engine or anything on the engine won't change WOT shift points. Now, if you have a THM-400 or other trans that uses a vacuum modulator...and your 'new or improved' engine has a lower vacuum level, your "daily driver" shift points (during normal driving--NOT at WOT) may change somewhat. If you have a TV cable on your trans, engine work will have no effect, as long as you hook up and adjust the cable correctly.

What are your shift points now? When I first installed my new B&M TH350 it shifted at 4200 rpm WOT. I adjusted it up. Took several test drives and adjustments to the governor to get it right, but is doable.

My stock L-48 transmission shifted at 4700 RPM WOT.
Little over 5000 is a good shifting point. Did you want it higher or lower?
