i wonder if i could chuck my existing bolt in the lathe and knurl them?

the stock bolts are way too long, you'd have to cut them down.

NO! the bolts are case hardened in their process of manufacture, the knurling is done before the hardening process. I don't know of a knurling tool that will displace case hardened material.

well, another idea shot down. i think i will look for a gear reduction starter that comes with the bolts.

I installed a DEI mini torque starter about 1 year ago.
So far flawless operation.
Restarted after idling in a 4th of July parade for over an hour.
Now if that's not heat I don't know what to tell you.
I think it was around $59.00 probablycheaper through amazon now.
It's a 168 tooth for a 427. No shims needed.
Droped the old one out, put in the new one.
Just make a mental note where the wires go before removing.
Should take you anywhere.

picked up a hitachi with shims and bolts, anybody use one? do you normally have to use the shims?
