im looking for a new starter and want some input. i would like something lighter and more compact. i was going to do a search but sometimes new stuff comes along, thanks
Smart choice, and relatively inexpensive compared to the modified high priced import 4 cylinder starters pushed on the internet by mail order houses.....
I haven't used it yet, but I just bought one on eBay, skipwhiteperformance high York mini started. 3hp, 68$. + 45$ shipping to Canada. Took 3 days, just picked it up
I Forget which bolts I used, but they were in stock at the dealer. I had to grind down the starter housing a little to fit in the clutch inspection cover.
for pre 1983 you would use standard bolts thread .buy a grade 8 3/8 bolt 1" longer then the starter housing mount .that will give you room for starter shims .
Late model GM metric starters use 10mm bolts about same as 3/8 SAE so they interchange. You need to know your flywheel ring gear tooth count, 10.5" clutch is 153 tooth, 11" clutch/TH400 168 teeth. One of my favorites is a 1988 and later C4 gear reduction DENSO starter, OEM GM but, may cost some money and only for a 10.5" 153 tooth flywheel. CVR makes a good starter, Hitachi also watch out for the Chinese junk out there and make sure it is a full roller bearing starter, some use a bushing on the drive end, and will slowly wear in use, causing flywheel ring gear destruction. Budget around $175-200 for a quality part.
Stock GM starter mounting bolts have a knurl on them to prevent misalignment of the starter, use a standard non-knurled bolt and you risk mis-alignment and flywheel ring gear damage.
I disagree that 3/8" and 10 mm bolts interchange. Using 3/8" bolts will leave 0.5 mm of slop. That's enough to misalign the starter.
GMPP makes special bolts with a 10 mm shoulder and 3/8 threads. Or you can do what I did: Insert thin wall brass tubing to remove the slop. Found it at the HW store.
What flywheel does the Tahoe starter work with (153 or 168)?
The 153 starter has the straight across bolt pattern and the 168 starter is staggered.
Thanks!
I bought a cheap Hitachi style mini starter off of eBay about 7 years ago for my 64 SS. It has performed flawlessly. The gear drive starters sound different than the stock starter. It sounds more like a Chrysler product starting. If it failed today, I more than got my moneys worth. I think I paid $59 for it.
I bought another cheap starter off eBay for my Vette. It is the late GM mini starter style. I'll see how that one goes.
