For a true $1,000 budget:

Rebuild both qjet and distributor for performance
K&N filter
1.6 roller rocker arms will increase lift and duration of your stock 300hp cam
Coated headers - Hedmann Jet-Hot #68301 emissions compatible
True dual exhaust and super turbo mufflers

I am assuming your cylinder heads are in decent condition. For this budget, you can't afford cylinder heads; it would be your entire budget.

My qjet works fine. The distributor is recurved, already have LT headers and true duals, Rockers are $159 and heads are $635/pair misc parts and gaskets make up the rest.

The base engine used the 929 camshaft for years and years. The base engine was rated at 300 horsepower up until the drop in compression ratio, and the change from gross horsepower to net horsepower rating system, so it is commonly referred to as the "300 hp cam". Let's not not even get started on the whole "net vs. gross horsepower" thing, it's like trying to figure out how many oranges equal an apple.

I didnt dyno my l48 stock or with just the head change, but i did manage to get it to 260 rwhp with heads, cam, aluminum intake 1.6 roller tip rockers, long tubes, duals and a holley. Probably 40 rwhp in the camshaft alone. If id went roller cam and afr heads I'd probably hit 300 at rear wheel.

Really? a cam which just redistributes where the power comes in is worth 40 HP? That surprises me.

On the l48 I was using edelbrock rpms, the cheaper ones, 185cc runners and 64cc chambers, only flowed 239 @ .500, with the xe262h it worked ok, but I think that vortecs actually out flow that series of rpm head. if I were going to do it again I'd definitely go with afr 180cc and a roller cam, I used afr 195's on the 400 I got in the vette now, the quality of the head alone is enough to know you get what you pay for.

I'd figure an honest 30 to 40 horse from the cam, with the heads, intake, headers and carb versus just the heads intake and carb, it adds time in which the valve is open and how much the valve opens plus the valve timing events that make it all come together to build power. If I'd gone roller the gain would have been more. It's more than adjusting were the power comes in.

flat tappet vs. roller, dude. It's not just a bigger cam, it's a roller, with a much different cam lobe profile. Also, since horsepower is just torque times rpm, divided by 5252, the higher the rpm you make your torque at, the higher the horsepower number will be.

260 rwhp is pretty good for that combo I would think. was it auto or manual trans? My heads flow only 248 @ .050 have a 270 roller cam. I need to get mine to a chassis dyno to see what it's doing for me eventually.
I've barely got this 350 done and installed and I'm already making plans for the 400 block I have in the garage. I was thinking 195 AFR's as well. You got a dyno on your current combo?
Sorry, off topic.

I dont. My friend that had the dyno sold it and it would cost me twice as much to dyno it now. On the l48 my timing was spot on and we picked up 9 horse through jet changes, it was a fun experience for sure, but if you have your timing dialed in and use an air fuel exhaust gas anilyzer for starting and the quarter mile jetting for the best mph then all the dyno does is give you numbers, dont get me wrong, if i could do it reqsonably price wise and i could run the petal i might do it again, but for now ill wait untill the track opens next spring. If money comes through it might be with the blower. 260 was actually 258 rwhp and it was through a 350 turbo. It was fun, but nothing like the 400.

There is NO intake that works with Vortec heads and a STOCK air cleaner under a STOCK Vette hood that I'm aware of, not even the L82 'cuz of the Vortec to standard bolt pattern difference.

Edelbrock performer 2116 i think. If it doesnt fit, so what, I'll make it fit. I'm so way past it has to be "stock".

Been there, done that, won't go back, nothing but a money pit and if you use repro "is it really matching, stock?"

I'm actually looking forward to cutting a hole in a corvette hood LOL if I have to!

I had an Edelbrock Performer manifold, with Vortec heads, with a Qjet and a stock, single snorkel air cleaner under the stock hood of my 77 for a while.

Edelbrock's own published data says a Performer won't fit under a Vette hood...maybe they need to footnote which years it won't fit under. I'm glad it worked out for you without cutting anything up.

If Mick is willing to run an aftermarket dropped base air cleaner, which it sounds like he is, he will be able to run a Performer EPS with no problems.....probably.......
