Default Center shift console removal help ? ;)

Hello,

I need to removel the shift center console to install new carpet + install a new leather boot and inspect the wires etc under there....how complicated is it?
Could you direct me to an illustrated step by step link if possible?
...
And what about the shift **** ball...I know there is a spring inside that pops out...
any tricks there???

Btw: I have a 1973 corvette auto.

Thanks

I just took my new console to the shop that will be redoing the interior. It came with 3 pages of instructions so if no one else has the info I will see if I can't get them back on Monday.

You might also want to check out the Index and Assembly Manual from Eckler's

If you are going to remove the rear E Brake console as well be sure to remove the bolt from inside the center glove box. Remove the cardboard liner to locate the securing the rear of the console.

The only really tricky parts are removing the bolt that holds the parking brake console to the rear wall, (access it through the jack compartment)

And the two nuts that hold the center dash cluster to the shift console. The general consensus is going up from the side using a long 1/4 drive ratchet and deep socket, but I've done it with wrenches, (and many flip overs), prefer the socket now days

Other than that it's pretty straight forward

Rear bolt suggestions here

Two nuts on the studs holding the center gauge cluster to console, I now prefer Alan's method over my old way

Hi c73,
The bolt for the rear of the e-brake console can be reached from the jack storage compartment.
You might also consider installing the carpet with the shifter and e-brake consoles in place. They need to be loose, (unscrewed), but the carpet can easily be slipped under the sides of the consoles after it has been trimmed. In fact the consoles need to be in place so you can determine how much carpet needs to be trimmed.
If too much carpet is wedged under the consoles the sides of the consoles flare out and the result is a poor fit.
All 4 sides of the front carpet pieces will need to be trimmed to fit.
Here's a couple of pictures from my 71.
Measure, measure, measure!!!!! TRIM ONLY A LITTLE BIT AT A TIME!!!!!
Regards,
Alan

Note about 2" maximum extends up under the consoles' sides after trimming.( Compare to first 2 pictures)
