Just received and mounted the 700r4 (replaced my th350 in my 80) and have questions:
1 will the shifter cable mount to the trans pan or does it need a mod of some kind?
2 I may have messed up the top (I think it's the return line) on the trans itself, the brass fitting in the line to the trans is a bid stripped. What's the best way to fix it. Is the a disconnect kit that I can use? Am having a hard time connecting it. The lower transmission line is ok
3 what gm part number filler tube and dipstick can I use? Or what other gm car tube and dipstick can I use (eg c4 vette or thrid gen camaro etc)?

Any thought...

You will have to modify the shift cable bracket or replace it with one made for a 700R4. The 'new' bracket has to hold the shift cable in the same relative location to the shift shaft.
Measure the distance from the flange on the THM-400 bracket to the center of the shift shaft; the bracket on the 700R4 needs to match that same distance. Since the pan mounting bolt pattern is different between the two transmissions, just swapping the 400 bracket over to the 700R4 won't work. You have to modify the bracket or buy a 'correct' one.
Garygnu, I would have to cut the coolant line to replace the brass fitting, I'm not sure what to do next...
I read upon the jiffy-tite (a bit more then I'm looking to spend):
just rebuilt my 700r..thing takes 11 quarts with new converter, otherwise, 5. Don't know about yours but c-4 700r tranny has two bolts that bolt to a beam going back to the rearend.. NO tranny crossmember mount. If I remember correctly, you can change out the rear extension housing to fit a tranny crossmember. The vette 700r also has better gears with the 86 having the best stall speed. Speaking of that..a new S-10 converter fitting the v-6 will cross over to the 700r. It has the higher stall speed just like the vette.
maybe loosen the tranny coolant line from the radiator ,and remove the cross member and lower the trail shaft of the tranny down a little .the engine motor mounts should be flexible enough to allow the tranny to drop down ,to gain access to the cooling line fittings.
Can I use shifter cable bracket from the thrid gen camaro?
It was my experience even with summit racing 10 minutes from office that no matter what 700R4 shifter kit i tried something was always wrong. The problem is that a c-3 console is so small compared to C4 Vettes and Cameros.
I actually ended up cutting an addition detent for first and later just said why even bother so the first indicator position on mine was second gear so it would allow the tranny to do a 1-2 shift and then I could manually do the 2-3 shift
