I recently purchased a '68 roadster with a 4 spd. The current shifter boot is rubber and has several tears in the rubber. I ordered a replacement and it came but it is a leather boot. Has the same 4 screws attachment.
I need assistant from anyone who has replace a shifter boot. My issue is how to get the ball and reverse lock T off so that I can slide the leather boot over the shifter.
I don't know if I'm off base with my thinking of what I need to do to install the new boot. If I am, I'd appreciate someone straightening me out and telling me the correct way to install or remove the shifter ball and lock out.

Hi Rick,
The shifter ball (if it's the original type) is threaded on to the shifter's stem. Grab it with your hand and turn counter clockwise to remove it from the stem.
Once the ball is off you'll be able to pull straight up on the t-handle to remove it. Be careful as you remove it (slowly) since a small spring will come with it and needs to go back into place.
Good Luck!
Regards,
Alan
...and once you remove the ball and T handle you'll need to remove the shifter console and turn it over to install the new/OEM boot. It attaches from underneath and then you push it up through the shifter rectangle.
The rubber boot has a metal clip and screw that hold it to the tranny tunnel. I installed mine after taking out the shifter console plate that Hammerhead mentioned above. If you feel like it you could put a small amount of silicone on there. Just enough to seal out the gasses.
For me it made a huge difference in the car. I was able to keep the exhaust/burning oil smells out of the interior. It also helped keep out some of the heat.
....so to be clear: there are actually TWO shifter boots.
A lower rubber boot that mounts beneath the shift console directly to the transmission tunnel which acts as a dirt, sound, vapor, cold, heat whathaveyou barrier AND a upper leather boot (which you mentioned receiving) that mounts on the shift console whose primary purpose is mostly aesthetic.

Yes Fred made it clear. That lower rubber boot keeps a lot of heat out of the passenger compartment. U will really feel a difference once the tunnel is sealed out.

Technically, mine's keeping a lot of COLD out of the passenger compartment right now.
