My old girl is now 20 yrs old and still has the original oxygen sensor. So, I'm thinking I should replace it- just on the age factor. What are the odds of me getting it out of there without the use of explosives??? Also, are all 02 sensors created alike, or should I stick with one from GM??? Tips and comments wanted and welcome.
Suggest you 1st soak thread area with PB Blaster for a couple of days, then start engine and run for a couple of minutes to get the area warm, but not hot, and then attempt removal using the special slotted deep socket, or if you can't 'borrow' one from your local auto parts store, use a flare nut wrench as a 2nd alternative. Oxygen sensors are installed using anti-seeze on the threads to facilitate removal, and I honestly have never had a problem with removal using above technique.
Going with GM replacement is probably a good idea, however I've never had a problem using the Bosch brand sensors which are sold by Auto Zone, and I believe Advance Auto Parts stores as well. (In my area, Auto Zone is almost always less expensive than Advanced Auto Parts store).
I would be amazed if you can remove the 20 year old oxygen sensor. I remove and replace mine yearly putting fresh anti seize on it . I have removed some from mustangs and have got lucky a few times. Removing the oxygen sensor that is. :)
Shouldn't be too hard if you let the penetrating oil soak in. I would definitely recommend using the oxygen sensor socket, though. The Bosch brand works fine. However, make sure you get a direct fit rather than the universal. With the universal, you have to cut and splice wires.
